Costa Rica Tours

Boasting lush tropical rainforests, awe-inspiring volcanoes, soothing hot springs and the highest concentration of species in the world, Costa Rica has even more to offer than its world famous beaches and a name that directly translates to “Rich Coast” might suggest. Numerous microclimates, varied topography and 5% of the world’s total biodiversity provide something for everyone to enjoy and it’s easy to see why Costa Rican people (“Ticos”) have been ranked the “happiest people in the world” by the Happy Planet Index.

Colorful toucans, howler monkeys and slow-moving sloths are just a few of Costa Rica’s diverse inhabitants that inspire even the most active of travelers to slow down, look and listen, while raging rivers and canopy-top zip lines dare the timid traveler to experience the country’s magnificence from another vantage point.   You, too, are likely to find yourself mesmerized by the natural beauty, lulled by the leisurely pace and captivated by the culture.

In addition to its natural, environmental appeal, a strong focus on education and a stable political climate has rendered Costa Rica increasingly attractive to foreign investors and travelers alike.  Although a percentage of Costa Ricans live below the poverty line, the country’s dedicated interest in sustainability and conservation of its unique and diverse ecosystem has attracted a great deal of tourism and has earned Costa Rica the title of “greenest” place on earth.

Day 1 – Arrival
We will depart as a group and fly to San José, Costa Rica, where we will be welcomed by our Sustainable Horizon Group Leader and driver.  After we drive to our hotel in the central valley, we will have dinner and prepare for the adventure ahead.  Should we arrive early enough, we may head to Arenal this afternoon and stay the first night near the volcano.

Day 2 – Arenal Volcano
In the morning we will make our way to the Arenal.  Arenal is the twelfth most active volcano in the world and has retained its almost perfect conical shape despite a number of highly explosive eruptions.  Nearly continuous activity at its summit makes for impressive displays of pyroclastic “natural fireworks” by night and columns of ash accompanied by thunderous rumbling by day. When we reach the Arenal Volcano area we'll visit a local farm and with our host Don Juan we will learn a lot about the challenges and joys of farming.  Afterwards we will enjoy a lunch specially prepared with natural ingredients from the farm.  After lunch we will go on a hike through the national park. This interpretive hike takes us through three distinct environments. One minute you will find yourself clambering across a moonscape of old volcanic flows and the next you’ll have to search for occasional gaps in the dense jungle canopy, where columns of light illuminate broadleaf underbrush.  Along the way, our Program Leader will help explain the geology of the volcano and the ecology of this unusual environment. After this adventure, we will enjoy the hot springs heated by volcanic action and have dinner afterward.  We will stay overnight in our comfortable hotel near the Arenal Volcano.

Day 3 – Arenal Area and La Selva Biological Station
In the morning we will experience the tropical forest like never before, from the perspective of the monkeys and birds which live in the canopy. This experience combines adrenaline-filled flights through the forest canopy on zip lines and time on platforms admiring the beauty of a tropical forest from above near the Arenal Volcano. After lunch, we’ll make our way to La Selva Biological Station, one of the premier ecology research stations in all of Costa Rica.  It is located at the union of two major rivers in the Caribbean lowlands of northern Costa Rica. With some of the most pristine old growth tropical rainforest in Costa Rica, it offers a unique combination of pristine ecology and expert naturalist guides.  There is no better place in Costa Rica to learn about this endangered ecosystem.   After dinner we will go on an interpretive night hike to see the different animals that come out at night.   In the evening we will stay at a lodge close to the station.

Day 4 – La Selva and Central Valley
We will wake up early for an interpretive nature at the biological station.  Afterward we will drive to La Paz Waterfall Gardens.  Amongst the lush rainforest, flowers, and colorful birds lay three kilometers of paved trails that wrap around these remarkable waterfalls. The platforms along the trail afford you the luxury of viewing the waterfalls from above, below, and center while being misted by its spray. Trails follow along the La Paz River and begin at the welcome center where you proceed to the hummingbird garden.

The hummingbird garden is home to twenty four species of these vibrantly colored little creatures. Feeders are dispersed throughout the garden, making it easy to observe their interactions and feeding habits. Next take a stroll through the exotic Orchid garden and into the Frog Pond. Here you'll find frogs like the poison dart frog and green leaf frogs. The Serpentarium hosts thirty different species of snakes found all over Costa Rica. Tonight we will share laughs and memories as we celebrate our time shared together with a farewell dinner.
