You may imagine Miami as more of a vacation spot than an educational destination, but this city offers plenty of student-friendly experiences. Of course, Miami is the perfect spot for outdoor activities, from a leisurely day at the beach to hiking, biking, and kayaking to guided ecological tours. Young naturalists can explore Florida’s beautiful ecosystem at Everglades National Park, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, and Biscayne National Park, which consists of 172,000 acres of reefs, marine wildlife and even shipwrecks. Attractions like airboat tours and the Shark Valley Tram Tour allow students to see alligators, turtles, birds, and other wildlife up close with an experienced guide. Students can get a chance to marvel at Florida’s marine diversity with a visit to Miami Seaquarium, and admire rare flora and fauna at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden or Vizcaya Museum and Garden.

The sunshine is definitely an attraction in itself, but hot student groups can get a break from the heat by visiting some of Miami’s excellent museums. The Miami Art Museum is dedicated to contemporary art, while the Wolfsonian Museum highlights architecture, design and propaganda from the year 1885 to 1945. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science (formerly known as the Miami Science Museum) houses both a planetarium and an aquarium. The museum’s permanent exhibitions are dedicated to South Florida’s biodiversity, the physics of light, aviation, the human mind and body and more.

Miami’s neighborhoods are full of art, shopping and great food! Head to the Wynwood Arts District, the epicenter of the arts in Greater Miami, where you’ll find over 50 art galleries, 4 museums and major collections, and much more. Students will particularly enjoy Wynwood Walls, an outdoor museum dedicated to street art. Coconut Grove, Miami’s oldest neighborhood, is a bayside area full of banyan trees and palms that gives off a laid-back, bohemian vibe and offers beautiful views. In Miami Beach students can take a guided walking tour of the historic Art Deco District to learn about its unique history and pastel, neon-accented architecture and then explore Lincoln Road, a pedestrian-only street lined with shops, outdoor cafes, and restaurants.
